America A Patriotic Primer by Lynne Cheney and illustrated by Robin Preuss Glasser, published in 2002, from front book flap: "America: A Patriotic Primer is a succinct history of the United States, an ABC of the principles on which this country was founded, and a book for children and families to pore over, discuss, and cherish. A is for America, the land that we love, B is for the Birthday of this country of ours...To choose the twenty-six people and ideas that comprise the book, Lynne Cheney has drawn on a life-time of learning about the American past, and on the inspiration that comes from witnessing recent history firsthand. Illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser imbues Mrs. Cheney's words with childlike joy through her exuberant drawings. Together they have created a patriotic primer, a book that teaches history by celebrating the diversity, tenacity, and faith of the American people. This A to Z of America frames the story-and the miracle-of our country."
A is for Abigail An Almanac of Amazing American Women by Lynne Cheney and illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser, published in 2003, from front book flap: "Lynne Cheney and Robin Preiss Glasser collaborated on America: A Patriotic Primer, which captured the imagination of American children and became a national best-seller. Now they turn their hands to A is for Abigail: An Almanac of Amazing American Women and bring the great women of American history to life. Filled to the brim with words and pictures that celebrate the remarkable (although often unmarked) achievements of American women, this is a book to relish and to read again and again. Mothers, daughters, schoolchildren, generations of families-everyone-will take Abigail Adams's words to heart and "remember the ladies" once they read the stories of these astonishing, astounding, amazing American women."
America's Promises by Alma Powell and illustrated by Marsha Winborn, published in 2003, is about "America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth - was founded in 1997 to challenge the nation to make our children a national priority. Our mission is to mobilize people from every sector of American life to build the character and competence of our nation's youth by fulfilling five promises of young people." Get this book to read about the five promises that over 500 organizations are working to fulfill the promises!
Yankee Doodle America by Wendell Minor, published in 2006, from front book flap: "If you traveled the roads of colonial America, colorful hand-painted signs would greet you when you came across an inn or tavern, and inside, folks would be gathered who would be eager to share the news of the day. Wendall Minor invites us on just such a journey through America in the days of its struggle for independence. Each striking illustration, painted on hand-carved replicas of these signs, introduces readers to the people, places and events that gave birth to our nation. Beginning with the Stamp Act that angered the patriots and inspired the "Sons of Liberty" to protest, Minor takes us on a journey where we meet George Washington (who gave his farewell speech to his soldiers at Fraunces Tavern) and Thomas Jefferson (who penned the first draft of the Declaration of Independence at a Philadelphia tavern), among many historical figures, and learn about the documents and battles that keep the fight for freedom alive. Wendell Minor has crated a book of great beauty - every image invites the reader into it and offers up a sense of mystery to spark their curiosity about the history of our great nation." This book I got at a professional development for educators presented at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas!

The President and Mom's Apple Pie

The President and Mom's Apple Pie by Michael Garland, published in 2002 - from the front book jacket, "It's 1909, and the President of the United States is coming to town! The streets are packed with people waiting for a glimpse of jolly President William Howard Taft. But when Taft's train finally pulls into the station, he finds that the cheering crowd pales in comparison to a delicious smell wafting on the summer breeze. A boy steps forward and offers to help Taft find what he is looking for. With the entire crowd eagerly tagging along, the boy leads the President on a high-calorie tour through the best comfort foods in town. When Taft himself discovers the source of the aroma, it gives the boy a story to boast about for years to come. Michael Garland's vivid, detailed artwork incorporates the nostalgic ingredients of might-have-been history to create this satisfying slice of small-town America.
It's a fun story to share with students and there is also some fun facts about President William Howard Taft. Read it to your class and serve up some apple pie while they listen!

The Patriotic Unit Includes:

1. Read and Write Around the Room - "posters" are provided and the intent is that the posters will be hung around the room. Students place the Recording Sheet on their clipboard, choose a pointer, walk around the room finding the posters and filling out the Recording Sheet. I've included 2 different sets with 2 different fonts - you can choose the one you like best.
2. Factually Speaking - a set of Addition Flash Cards 0-12 for students to work with a partner to place the problem card and answer card side by side under the appropriate heading/answer. Students are "speaking" to each other about the math facts as they work their way to create a big math fact chart. This gets students up and out of their seats and becomes body/brain learning.
3. Estimation Jar - the jar is designed to be themed-based. This exposes students to the vocabulary once again and provides an opportunity to practice various math standards.
4. Task Cards - this set of Task Cards provides students an opportunity to practice double digit subtraction problems with regrouping.
5. Fast Facts - Fast Fact Recording Sheets for students to fill out as they research about various topics.
6. Exit Tickets - 8 exit tickets for students to answer as they leave for the day or move to a different task.
7. Pictures of book covers of books you might want to use during this unit.

American Flag

As we go into the Election Week there will be many lessons on the election process, patriotic units, and all things American. Here are four children's books about the American flag that have information that even adults may not know! After reading these four books and more, students will come away knowing information about Betsy Ross, what the stripes on the flag stand for, how many stripes, how many stars and what each star stands for, what the colors red, white, and blue mean, and so much more!
F is for Flag by Wendy Cheyette Lewison and illustrated by Barbara Duke, published in 2002. From the back cover, "The American flag fills us with hope and pride. Our flag reminds us that we are strong. We are united. We are Americans. This book gently explains to young children how our flag brings together everyone in American, in good times and bad times."
The Flag We Love by Pam Munoz Ryan and illustrated by Ralph Masiello, published in 1996 is a book I've used as a mentor text to show the format the author uses to showcase information. The book told in a rhyming text has a box at the bottom of each page with non-fiction fast facts about the flag related to the topic on that page - from the flag being draped on President Lincoln's casket to Neil Armstrong planting the American flag on the moon. From the back cover: "Vivid illustrations and inspiring text reveal the history behind our nation's most enduring symbol. Enjoy a red-white-and-blue introduction to our country's steadfast ideals: pride, individual rights, respect, honor, patriotism, and more. This memorable book will remind you that you do indeed have a flag to love!"
From Publishers Weekly (February 5, 1996) "Strike up the band and prepare to salute - this patriotic picture book unabashedly celebrates the Stars and Stripes...the result should delight Yankee Doodle dandies everywhere." This books is also the recipient of:
1997 NCSS/CBC Notable Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies
1997 Early Childhood News Director's Choice Award

Betsy Ross and the Silver Thimble by Stephanie Green and illustrated by Diana Magnuson, published in 2002 is a Ready-To-Read Level 2 (students are beginning to read independently) book in the Childhood of Famous Americans series. In this story Betsy ends up proving something to herself as she was trying to prove to her brother that she can do whatever he can!
Meet Our Flag, Old Glory by April Jones Prince and illustrated by Joan Paley, published in 2002 is full of information about the American flag! From the front cover book jacket, "Meet Our Flag, Old Glory.
She's red and blue and white. Her stripes are like a peppermint's; Her stars and big and bright.
For generations, Americans have looked to Old Glory's brilliant colors and graceful lines and have found a steadfast symbol of freedom, hope, unity, pride, and strength. With lively verse and bold, dramatic illustrations, Meet Our Flag, Old Glory invites young Americans to explore the meaning of their flag, both in their communities and in their own lives. A visual and narrative account of Old Glory's history completes this moving tribute to our spirit and purpose as a nation."
